Ballast Replacements
If you have any fluorescent, HID, or specific types of LED lighting, they depend upon a ballast to make it work. In a nutshell, the ballast manages the electricity for proper distribution by acting as a current regulator. The ballast is connected to the wiring system to control, regulate, and stabilize the light output throughout the fixture. Ballasts are matched specifically to the type of light bulb they operate, and not all ballasts are compatible.
Commercial ballasts, for instance, are used with fluorescent lights to limit current to fluorescent bulbs and prevent them from increasing uncontrollably, overheating and burning out. GFCI Outlets
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.
GFCI outlets are typically found in areas of buildings where water is present, (such as kitchens and bathrooms) which increases the risk of shock or shorting out. They can be identified by the “test” and “reset” buttons located on the receptacle. These outlets help protect you from electrical hazards by monitoring the amount of electricity flowing through the circuit and sensing when there is going to be an overload or a shock; then the GFCI outlet will turn itself off before the shock can occur.
If your GFCI outlet stops the flow of power under normal operating conditions and the conditions are safe, the GFCI can be manually reset by pressing the “reset” button to restore power. GFCI’s are much more reliable than depending on the circuit breaker in your electrical box to trip and stop current flow, as they are sensitive to even small variations in current. In fact, they are designed to operate before electricity can affect your heartbeat. Because of this function, it is important to check all of the GFCI outlets in your home monthly. Occasionally a GFCI outlet will not reset. This is a serious problem that needs the attention of a licensed electrician

Child Proof Outlets
Child proof electrical outlets are called TRR’s for “tamper resistant receptacles”. A TRR is an outlet in which the electrical contact is essentially closed off by spring-loaded shutters. For the shutters to open, both springs must be compressed at the same time, as they would when a plug is inserted. If only one side is compressed, however, the shutters remain closed. That means if your little one pokes a paper clip inside one of those little “holes” to see what happens, the shutter will prevent the paper clip from becoming fully inserted and thus preventing electrical shocks.
These tamper-proof electrical outlets are so effective that as of 2008 the National Electrical Code (NEC) has required their installation in all new homes.
